Mwendo Dawa - Live at Montreux Jazz Festival (Dragon LP 1980)

For me this was an important band in the latter part of the 70's, they belonged to the ones who opened up my ears for free music expressions. Me and TC3 used to go to the jazz club Nefertiti, drink some beer, listen to whoever was playing. Some of the bands were local bands of local fame and they consisted of marvellous musicians. Some of them made an extensive career, played abroad, and so.
In the beginning Mwendo Dawa was a big band, about 7 or 8 (or more?) members. Three drummers, two basses, Susanna on piano & keyboard and Ove J on tenor sax. For me the long solo's of Ove were the highlight of their gigs, often starting modest, but then turning into fire and free form wailing - and I really loved it. The band was always great, but for me Ove was the master.
From late 70's and on to these days they've recorded a huge amount of albums; Mwendo Dawa, other groups, duos, solos, whatever. Honestly I've only heard most of the MD's albums and not the rest. The albums are great, but never near the furious peeks of the band playing live. It can be my memory failing, but this is how I remember it. Here and there you can hear Ove's sax glow on the records, sometimes getting close to fire, and the band is a great band.
Of those five MD LPs I have in my collection this live album from Montreux is the one coming closest to my memories of them playing live at Nefertiti. It's mainly structured, the loose and free form moments are few. But, I strongly recommend it. It's recorded 1979 and released the year after.

Having a back history of group names like Don & Mac, The Age, Stefan-Olofs Orkester, Viscously Cartilage, Andersson & Ek and others, Oax and Yan, the two members of our little combo took a short break in 1975.
This break happened to last for 30 years.
After a couple of years talking about "Wonder what it would be like doing some music again" finally in May 2005 we brought our simple equipment to Camp Brana and made some unprepared instant composing recordings for a week.
The result became Dark White Morning, a 2 CDR collection, about 90 minutes of music. It's unpolished and raw, almost no editing or treatments, just us playing live in the cold living room of this badly heated cottage. Very amateurish and innocent, but also a very important first step for Joxfield ProjeX.

At the end of the week it was self-printed in about 20 copies and given away to friends (or enemies some would say when hearing the music). Almost no-one heard it. Daevid Allen received a copy and wrote some nice words about it, especially about Day Clubbing, the wild disco rave tune you'll find below.

Swedish Azz & Gunnar Lindgren & Gilbert Holmström - Nefertiti 2012-03-02

Two days ago Oax n Yan, the infamous duo of JoxProX + MCN, the official president of the unofficial JoxProX fan club + Wolf, ehhr, The Wolf, took our long legs in direction to the legendary jazz-blues-freeform-whatever club Nefertiti to watch and listen to Swedish Azz, Mats G's and Per Åke H's band who pays and plays tribute to known and unknown treasures from the Swedish jazz scene of mainly the 50's and 60's and put it into context of today. This night they were guested by Gunnar Lindgren and Gilbert Holmström, two legends!
The concert lasted for maybe 2 hours, probably one of the 10 best concerts we've ever been at (and I'm talking about loads of concerts over the last 40 years).
The track above is the encore.

Below you'll find Gilbert's composition 'Fåglarna' (The Birds), here played for the second time ever (the first time was on Swedish national radio 1966). An abstract, wonderful composition.

This is one of few track by Coltrane which he put into an arrangement for a bigger band. It was said that Gil Evans was contacted for doing the arrangements, but it didn't happen, so it went over to Dolphy and Tyner. The track is filled with exraordinary contributions from all the band players. The track is really pointing forward, bringing me to thoughts of Coltrane's "Kulu se Mama" as well to the single note bass of Miles' "Go Ahead, John". Almost any of Coltranes tracks is one of his best. This is as well.

Oax Pick - Neil Young's "Zuma"

This guy has been around in my ears for ages. I do really admire the deep integrity of him, how he's been challenging himself, his record labels as well as his audience. He's always been on the tip of his toes, no matter what he's been doing and still do. Some albums over the years has been disasterous in my ears, but nethertheless I respect it, he's just following his heart and in the end he always land in some good direction.
So, when listening to "Zuma" today I realised I just had to write a few words on him. The album is filled with excellent pop music, some country tunes (I'm definitely not a fan of country music, but these are great), some acoustic moments and - finally - the two tracks 'Danger Bird' and 'Cortez the Killer', two slow, beautiful tunes filled with his barbed wired guitar playing which makes the hair on my arms stand straight - oh, how good it is!!!
There are many reasons to come back to this guy...

A couple of weeks ago I went to see a gig by the legendary Swedish prog-psych-trance band Träd Gräs & Stenar.
Except some intermissions of various length they have been around since late 60's as Pärson Sound > International Harvester > Harvester > Träd Gräs & Stenar. The members of the groups has been the same more or less. The core for longest time has been Bo Anders Persson (guitar, vox), Thomas Mera Gartz (drums, vox), Jakob Sjöholm (guitar, vox) & Torbjörn Abelli (bass, vox).
A couple of years ago Bo Anders took the decision to quit, partly because of tinnitus, maybe a bit tired of touring and maybe because of reaching a respectfully age. The band decided to go on with Reine Fiske (Dungen, etc) as new force on solo guitar.
In summer 2010 Torbjörn sadly passed away in borelia.
At least I thought I'd seen the band for the last time. Obviously, after some time had slipped, they took another decision, to go on with Sigge Krantz on bass. Sigge might have avoide the spotlight but had been around for years as musician, recording engineer etc, so he was a part of the movement, so to speak.
When watching their concert they also had added Thomas Tidholm (sax, flute, vox) who had been a member of the band before the TG&S incarnation.
My expectation was rather high and I wasn't disappointed. All guys are great musicians, they mix long improvised, psychedelic space-trance-minimalistic powerful tunes with shorter written tunes with vocals. All within the frame of their unique sound. Second set added Thomas T and it all when into sung-based material even though it also went away for longer instrumental parts. As someone said, Thomas is kind of the Tuli Kupferberg of the band. He was so funny and thoughtful, delivering bananas to the audience.
There was no actual merchandise, but I saw that Jakob had a plastic bag with some vinyl albums and as I knew they recently had released the 'Gärdet 12.6.1970' live CD in a vinyl version I asked him if he had a copy of that. This very humble and polite guy had to excuse, he did only have one copy left and he had promised it to a 20-year old girl in the audience. "Of course she shall have it", I said, happy to know that the youngsters are attractive to these phychedelic sounds. Jakob said he thought the vinyl edition might be sold out, but when back home he could check it out by the guy responsible for the release, if there was any left and then send it to me. "Great" I said and we exchenged email addresses. A couple of days ago there was an email in my inbox: "I've found a copy and I've send it to you, you can pay to my account..." and the next day it was in my snail-mail box.
The album? Holy cow, I've heard it on CD, but now, with this expanded 2 x LP version on beautiful splash colour vinyl - what a sound! what a dynamic! what music!!! and also added a sidelong 22 minute track as a bonus. Mighty, mighty, this is good!!!
So, thanX Jakob for being such a nice and generous fellow doing this great gesture.

The festival of Gärdet? It should be at Skeppsholmen in the central of Stockholm as the first alternative, non-commercial, out-door festival in Sweden. The residental companies and offices at this tiny island did protest and the police said No to the event just the day before and some very quick arrangemtns had to be done to move it to the Gärdet field about 5 kilometers from there.

The Most Beautiful Band/Artist T-Shirt Ever...

It took me some 39 years to get it, but now it's mine!
I'm not the guy who must buy loads of souvenirs at concerts. I might buy some records if there are any at those events, that's nice, but t-shirts, posters, programs, whatsoever, isn't important for me.
But this particular item I always have thought belongs to my highly advanced dress-code, but for no reason at all it just didn't happen that I bought it. Until now, through Jonny at PlanetGong.
The t-shirt is the cover of Gong's 'Camembert Electric' album (Byg 1971, Virgin 1974), the first real Gong album, and it was drawn and designed by Daevid Allen. Actually, when the t-shirt first showed up I have no idea, but it has been around for ages, probably mid-70's or so.

Such a great woman she is, such an artist. Mixing wild wailing improvisations with tender and sweet melodies with huge artistic integrity, no matter if it's 1970 or almost 40 years later. People couldn't take her vocals style, people thought she split The B. So stupid they were, so ignorant. Imagine the notes of her voice came from a saxophone - see there! Ornette Coleman, Albert Ayler, Mats Gustafsson - name it, it would have had the same dignity of free form spirit. And The B? If it wasn't for her I think JL would have left a couple of years earlier, frustrated by being locked into something he couldn't manage any longer. So, thanX Yoko for just being the great artist you are! ThanX for being!

Sometimes you just have to rinse your mind. In moments like that Mainliner debute album Mellow Out is a good option. The trio of Asahito Nanjo (bass & vocals), Hajime Koizumi (drums) and Kawabata Makoto(motor psycho guitar) presents some distortions from hell, music filled with Jimi Hendrix' Foxy Lady DNA. It's uplifting, it's rewarding, it should have a place in every persons aural life.

Oax Pick - The Ex "Joggers & Smoggers" & Fred Frith "Step Across The Border"

In 1989 the Dutch avante-punkers The Ex took another step into The Art of Making Interesting Music - they opened up for improvisations, they started experimenting on records and they invited a lot of guests. The result of this can be heard on the wonderful 2 disc album Joggers & Smoggers, a collection of 34 very inspiring tracks of various kind.
I have always loved artists putting together their albums as kind of collages and when listening to J&S my mind slips into another important album of that time that always has made great impact on me, Step Across The Border by Fred Frith.
These two albums do have a lot in common - but they don't know it yet.
Lend both of them both of your ears for a while and you'll find out what!

Filled myself with a couple of Taliskers and put this on, let the nostalgia flow over me... but, wait... is it nostalgia? No, no, no... nothing like that even though this album was my favourite Christmas present in 1971, 40 years ago (Mah God! how time flies!)... no, it's much more than that... it's a wonderful heavy riff and even though the original track on Chicago Transit Authority is magnificent in itself, this is a 15½ minutes version that really takes off, leaving Terry Kath in one of his greater moments (and there was a lot of them), sometimes with Robert Lamm treating the organ also very inspring, battling along. A great piece of music by a really talanted band that got lost in AOR hell just shortly after. How could this happen???!!!!

Comment: the unsung juggernauts of krautrock and the champions of avant-prog/experimental rock are back with their brand new heavy one. The first impression of mine is that the Swedish duo seems to be so loud and defiant as never being before. There are up 4 tracks, first time after a while not being issued on Clinical Archives. However, these long-running compositions are filled in with the shards of abrasive sonic metal and razor-edged smithereens, thereby challenging the eminent noise concept of rock done ever before - from My Bloody Valentine`s charming guitar noise and The Jesus & Mary Chain`s dirty feedback-centered resonation to harsh, obsessive concepts of Fushitsusha, and Gerogerigegege and, on the other side, (Le) Fly Pan Am`s (N`Ecoutez Pas) arty noise episodes and post-rock-mixed vistas and Borbetomagus` free jazz-relied improvised noise. Furthermore, the second part of the 3rd track/part (Ola & The Jugglers) does have managed to acquire a highly rhythmic template below the shrieking massives of guitar riffs and "indecipherable" sort of trash (you can perceive even fusion-alike progressions emitting out from it!) and the closing development Cats Sing Strange Songs fuses some sorts of experimental tendencies into glacial glow-hued ambient music. The result is as powerful as JP`s aspirations proclaimed on a handful of the albums before, though, this times having a little different point of view and galvanized aspect. However, you can call it even the kind of white metal, because of its enormous, braw shape (though having more frantic impetus within it). Well done, Oax, and Yan."

Of course we thank our favourite guy Kert Semm a lot for his very generous review of our music, it's people like him that makes us want to go on doing weird sounds like these, keeps us on the track.

Reflections on Keith Tippett's Ark, Fire! Orchestra & Stuff

13 days since Christmas Eve, the Christmas tree still looks great, not a needle on the floor.
Sitting by the kitchen table, writing some diary notes, looking out trough the window, the sky is all blue, it looks a bit cold outside, no snow, but a beautiful winter day in this normally rainy city.
The music that recently has been played is the 2LP version of Keith Tippett's Ark "Frames - Music for an Imaginary Film", a FANTASTIC album with as well FANTASTIC players (Keith Tippett, Stan Tracey, Elton Dean, Trevor Watts, Brian Smith, Larry Stabbins, Marc Charig, Henry Lowther, Dave Amis, Nick Evans, Maggie Nicols, Julie Tippetts, Steve Levin, Rod Skeaping, Phil Wachsmann, Geoffry Wharton, Alexandra Robbins, Tim Cramer, Peter Kowald, Harry Miller, Louis Moholy, Frank Perry - Homage to all of them!). Jazz (or "jazz?") composition can't be much better than this. It invites to improvisation and collective joy.
But the reflection goes: Why are there so few of them, these compositions for big ensembles? And I'm not talking Big Band jazz. Ok, it might be a matter of time, money and lots of grey hair (for the composer/director), but nevertheless, why are there so few of them?
Do I have any answer? Of course not.

Which brings me to next Fridays event at Fylkingen, Stockholm, where Fire! Orchestra will bring something to us. The core of Fire! (Mats Gustafsson, Johan Berthling & Andreas Werlin) will lead (or maybe like Miles did, Directions by...) an ensemble of about 30 people coming from highly skilled improvisation, jazz, psych, etc scene of Sweden.
Where to put the expectations? Well, maybe a bit unfair to the involved (they're only humans, aren't they?), but the expactations might be a bit sky high, or at least close to the tree tops, the star of the Christmas tree, or where you put it yourself... Whatever it will be, I hope they record it.
And the two bums of Joxfield will be sitting there in the audience...

Tired of harsh aural moments? If so, but still ready for some attention, concentration and some good music, here's what you should go looking for: Lars Gullin (1928-1976), the genius Swedish barytone sax player. As often with great musicians like these they lived all too short, but left footprints bigger than any shoes could fit into. Majestic!
I don't remember if these two 2LP sets have been released on CD, but they are not too hard to find on vinyl for ok price. Much funnier that way!
And it's not any coinsidence that Mats Gustafsson's band Swedish Azz pays their tribute to Swedish treasures like Lars Gullin, Lasse Werner, Färnlöf, etc etc.
They can't be wrong, can they?

After a couple of hectic weeks with Christmas and New Year stuff, including the hysteric music circulating around during days like these, it's finally time to lean back in the sofa, put on some cool music.
The pick this time is the excellent psychedelic space rock band Hills. Even though they do have their roots elsewhere it seems like they've settled in our nice hometown Gothenholm Stockburg. And we fully enjoy their laid-back psychedelic music.
Their self-titled debute is a great one, but even greater is the next to come, Master Sleeps. There are various versions of the albums, but we prefere the LPs on Intergalactic Tactics Records. Right into our hearts!

Here's a mighty majestic 2LP + ½ 7" album by Tarfala Trio - some of the best improvised trio music you can get these days.
Mats Gustafsson blows his horns, Barry Guy speak to his bass like he (or it?) was God and Raymond Strid, ahh, Raymond Strid, what a percussive master he is - whatever he can't do with percussion has not to be done at all.
Four side-long tracks (+ the single-sided 7"), recorded live in Belgium and released in a most beautiful package, including a 12" photo-book, by the high quality Lithuania label NoBusiness Records.
Yet another day has been aurally saved.

This is one of the world's most underestimated band ever in my personal opinion, and when the book of rock and psychedelic music is written over and over again the band is often sadly overlooked. And it's a shame because the were so bloody good. Four albums (5 LPs) in little more than one year - and what a year!
Some of the tracks might be a bit dated, but most of them are classics amongst Joxfield friends and families. And God! how drunk we were when we tried to dance to some of them in those days.
The band? EB, of course, but also Berry Jenkins (drums) from the old Animals, and then added with Vic Briggs (guitar - the powerful attack-riff on Sky Pilot - it's his!), John Weider (guitar, violin) and Danny McCulloch (bass). For EOoU Zoot Money (keys, vocals) was added and for Love Is VB and DM left, Andy Summers joined (guitar - his 5 minutes solo on Coloured Rain is one of rock history's Top 10 guitar excesses).
A good bunch of albums to spend the day before Christmas Eve.

Fridge Leftovers Comes Alive by joxfieldprojex

First came the rain, then the snow, just like an ordinary Swedish winter.
This is an un-released track from the infamous 2009 Novemeber Session at Camp Kolpebo. A week-long day and night session. The result became a lot of rough mixes of 4 hours of music, sounds & visions.
Four of the tracks found the daylight on the VoxLuxRabax album this year.

One of the plans was also to record a kind of pop music album during that session, Captain Solar Disk Cocooning (in the Joxfield ProjeX way (which means not THAT much pop)), a collection of tunes mostly with vocals. 'Fridge Leftovers Comes Alive' is one of these tracks, a bit jazz influenced.
Yan: Basic pattern, bass, programmed drums, keyboard (including one of the few, but very appreciated moments when Yan flip the keys and becomes a real live musician, which he sometimes pretend he's not)
Oax: Words, improvised sort of melody, guitar, ebow
Recorded live over the basic pattern with just one overdub each.
